Collection Development

Purpose of the Collection

The purpose of the school library media collection at The Young Women’s Academy for Academic and Civic Development is to offer resources that encourage students to develop into skilled and discriminating users and producers of information. The collection will support and enhance the curriculum taught at the school. In addition, the collection will reflect the standards in school board rule 6Gx13-6A-1.26.

Scope of the Collection

The scope of the collection is to service the students, teachers and staff at The Young Women's Academy for Civic and Academic Development with resources that support the curriculum and extracurricular needs of the students and staff. The collection will support the various teaching/learning styles along with the Sunshine State Standards.

Selection/Evaluation Criteria

Evaluation and selection of materials is a continuing process that involves the entire school community. Instructional materials shall be evaluated using the following criteria: educational significance, appropriateness, accuracy, literary merit, scope, authority, special features, translation integrity, arrangement, treatment, technical quality, aesthetic quality, potential demand, and durability. In addition, materials should be bias-free and not include hard-core pornography. Gift materials will be subject to the same guidelines as purchased materials.

Staff Involvement in the Selection of Materials

The goal of the collection development plan is to ensure that materials targeted for purchase are representative of the priorities identified by the instructional staff. Input from the staff and students is desirable and necessary. The final selection of materials is the responsibility of the media specialist.

Policy for Challenged Materials

Intellectual freedom is "the right of every individual to both seek and receive information from all points of view without restriction". ALA A complaint may be resolved formally or informally. The policy for dealing with formal complaints is outlined in School Board Rule 6Gx13-6A-1.26.

Weeding Policy

Weeding ensures that the school library collection contains only those resources materials that are accurate, current, and relevant to the curricular and recreational programs of the school. CREW guidelines will be used in determining what materials to be weeded.
