J.R.E. Lee Opportunity School - Overview
•
J.R.E. Lee Opportunity School is an alternative
middle school in the Miami-Dade County Public
School system with boundaries extending from
north of Flagler Street to the Miami-Dade/Monroe
County line. Our students come from middle
schools in Regions IV, V, and VI and include
Exceptional Education, Limited English
Proficient, and both male and female students
from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. The
typical J.R.E. Lee student is 13-15 years old
and academically deficient in the content areas,
especially reading and writing. Students are
assigned to us in lieu of expulsion for various
infractions of the Code of Student Conduct. We
combine the development of reading and career
skills; lessons that easily relate to real-life
situations; the use of a Multiple Intelligences
approach; and an emphasis on hands-on
activities, in order to meet the diverse needs
of this population. Advanced academic classes
are provided based on the enrollment of eligible
students. Currently, no students who meet this
criteria are enrolled.
•
J.R.E. Lee Opportunity School is located at 6521
S.W. 62 Avenue on 3.34 acres in South Miami, an
incorporated city in Miami-Dade County. Four
buildings house 22 classrooms. This 78-year-old
school was built in 1924 and served the South
Miami area as an elementary community school
until the mid 1970's when it was converted to a
middle school to provide alternative educational
placement in the southern portion of Miami-Dade
County.
•
This school has been retrofitted to provide
Internet service to all classrooms, and there is
a minimum of three computers in each classroom.
Four of the 22 classrooms have been converted to
learning laboratories with a minimum of 20
computers. For the past six years, a serious
commitment has been made to improve technology
school wide, backed by the allocation of a
minimum of 10 percent of the discretionary
balance of the school budget. The Technology
Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, and
Business Education laboratories have undergone
major renovations. The changes made in each
laboratory provide better work stations and new
equipment related to the technology-oriented
workplace. E-rate funds have been used to
add Internet connections throughout the school.
QZAB funding has been used to assist with
purchasing the additional hardware needed in
order to ensure that each classroom has at least
three computer stations.
•
The
Business Education laboratory replaced the
previously outdated Career Laboratory. This new
laboratory was selected to participate in the
Business Center 21 pilot program; we are the
first middle school in Miami-Dade County to
feature a wireless network. Allocation for this
project was provided by the district office of
technology. The media center has been updated
with new furniture; Circulation Plus has been
added..
